Disposal of syringes, needles, and lancets is regulated. These items are called “sharps.”
They can carry hepatitis, HIV, and other disease-causing germs. Tossing them into the trash or flushing them down the toilet can pose health risks for others. Regulations governing disposal of sharps protect sanitation workers and the general public from needle sticks and illness.

Safely dispose of needles and other sharp devices at Bedford Memorial Hospital’s (BMH) Oakwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. Visit our designated drop-off site for complimentary, safe disposal. All sharps are accepted, though needles must be in a sharps container. Sharps containers are available for purchase at any local pharmacy.

New system provides high quality breast imaging in a patient-friendly environment

BEDFORD, Va. (April 10, 2013) – Bedford Memorial Hospital (BMH) is proud to now offer digital mammography to the community. The new digital mammography system can provide a more pleasant, soothing exam environment for patients while helping to minimize radiation dose and provide physicians with vital information.

The MAMMOMAT® Inspiration from Siemens Healthcare captures breast images with an X-ray detector that converts images into a digital picture that can be displayed immediately on the system’s computer monitor.

Unlike film, digital mammograms allow physicians to manipulate image characteristics such as magnification, orientation, brightness and contrast, which improve the ability to view specific areas of the breast. With the MAMMOMAT® Inspiration system, results are produced more quickly, helping to decrease anxiety for patients.

“We are so excited to be able to offer our patients digital mammography,” said Lisa Jordan, imaging services manager at BMH. “Digital mammogram images have the potential to provide clearer pictures of the breast, especially for women with dense breast tissue. Mammography screening is the preferred diagnostic test to find breast cancer in its earliest stages and we encourage women to make sure they are getting screened properly.”

*One in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer each year in America, which is the most common form of cancer in women. Mammography can help detect breast tumors at their earliest, most treatable stages.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 540-587-7806 or 540-587-3245.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEY AVAILABLE FOR COMMUNITY FEEDBACK

Survey to identify unmet needs and areas of improvement

BEDFORD, Va. (Feb. 6, 2013) – To better understand the health status of the community, Carilion Clinic is embarking on a process of identifying the unmet needs through a Community Health Needs Assessment. Along with a team of community representatives who work with vulnerable populations, including Energize Bedford, the Community Health Assessment Team is looking to gather information from the community to identify and analyze community health needs.

“The health assessment is a community-driven project and its success is highly dependent on the involvement of residents, health and human services, businesses, and community leaders in the community,” said Shirley Holland, vice president of Strategic Development at Carilion Clinic. “We need to understand the issues in order to help make improvements.”

Four Community Health Needs Assessments will take place this year in the New River Valley (except Giles), Tazewell, Bedford, and Franklin communities.

“We are working toward improving the health of the communities we serve and ask that community members share their feedback with us through a short survey,” explained Patti Jurkus, vice president and hospital administrator at Bedford Memorial Hospital. “The results of the survey will be used to determine the unique health needs in the communities and will be available to the public.”

In addition to a community survey, public health data will be analyzed and a survey of healthcare providers will occur. Following need identification, a community group will help develop recommendations to address those needs with the intent of implementing them over the next several years.

The survey is open to all members of the New River Valley (except Giles), Tazewell, Bedford, and Franklin communities through the end of April. To access the survey by phone, call 1-888-964-6620. To access the survey online, visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CarilionCommunityHealthSurvey. The survey is also available in print form through partner agencies.

Letter from Patti Jurkus, CEO The Tobacco-Free Environment Plan on March 1st
Read more ›

Letter from Patti Jurkus, CEO

The Tobacco-Free Environment Plan on March 1st , 2010 we will be taking the first step on a journey toward better health for you, your coworkers and everyone who visits our facility.

On that date, the Bedford Memorial Hospital campus will join our Carilion Clinic and Centra -based facilities and become tobacco-free environments. There are several reasons why we’re working toward this goal. I want to share them with you to ensure you have up-to-date and reliable information about our plan for this initiative.

First and foremost, we are going tobacco-free because we are dedicated to providing you with clean, healthy places to work. We also are committed to ensuring healthier areas where our patients are treated and visited by their friends and families. Additionally, Bedford Memorial Hospital is expected to set a healthy example for the residents of our community and lead the way for other businesses in the area to provide their employees and volunteers with healthy workplaces. This initiative is a way we can accomplish these goals.

I know this plan is a challenge, especially to those of you who use tobacco products. That is why we are working now to ensure resources are available to support you as we transition to tobacco-free workplaces.

To find out more information about programs and products available to you, contact the Community Educator, Anita Lowe at 587-3308.

I know you will join me in supporting this initiative. It is a step in the right direction on the journey to better health for us and those we serve.
